The food additives amendment (FEAD) is the legislation that was introduced to limit the use of certain additives in food in the United States. These additives are used to make dairy products and snack foods, for example, chocolate, potato chips, and corn flakes to name a few. The amendment includes a ban on artificial colors, flavors, and sweeteners, but allows these so-called “natural” additives to be used as they are currently sold.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the agency responsible for approving new food additives, substances that are added to foods to modify their chemical properties. These additives are allowed under the amendment because of their use in food packaging. The FDA does require that food additives and other substances used in food be tested at the state level for safety prior to the launch of the amendment.
If you are not eating the foods labeled as “generally regarded as safe (GRAS)”, you are taking food additives. If you are eating food labeled “generally regarded as safe (GRAS)”, you are not taking food additives.
The U.S. added a new type of food additive to the ingredients list in 1976. This food additive is called a “mercurial.” This is what the FDA calls a “pesticide.” It is a substance that is used to kill pests. A pesticide is a substance that is very toxic to animals and humans. Its purpose is to reduce the population of pests.
The food additives amendment has been passed into law by the US Congress and the Food and Drug Administration has started implementing this new law to reduce the amount of food additives allowed in food products.
As a farmer from the Central District, I can tell you just how important it is to use the correct additives in our food. When it comes to the food ingredients, there are so many different types. First, there are natural substances like essential oils, herbs, and spices that can be added to the food for added flavor or to provide color or nutritional content. Second, there are manmade additives which are added to food for a variety of reasons.
The Food and Drug Administration is now allowing foods that are high in artificial colors and flavors to be sold in the U.S. since it has received more than 5,000 scientific studies that indicate that these additives can cause cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
