If you have to ask “okay, what is a compensating balance?” then you are missing out on one of the most important things a person can get to: self-awareness. When it comes to understanding the world around us, we have to first understand ourselves.
If we are aware of our own behaviors and how we behave, we know who we are and what we do and how we act. We have a better understanding of what motivates us and what our limits are. We also have a better understanding of how we react to the things we can’t control around us and how we cope with the things we can control. In short, we have a better understanding of ourselves. This understanding is called self-awareness.
When we’re not aware of our own behavior, we are unaware of the consequences of our behavior. We have a tendency to see the world as black and white, and to think that any action we take is either right or wrong. The problem is that our actions are not black and white.
The problem with thinking things are black and white is that we are often blind to the shades of grey.
Self-awareness is the ability to see the grey. When we are aware of what we are doing, we can decide whether or not to take certain actions. For example, when we see that our own actions are not always going to be positive, we can decide to take action in hopes of avoiding negative consequences. Self-awareness helps us make decisions when we are blind to the shades of grey.
This is why we say that Self-awareness is a balancing act. When we are aware of what we are doing, making a decision, and can see the shades of grey, we can make a decision. When we don’t have this awareness, we have to make decisions based on a lack of information.
Self-awareness is like a compensating balance we need in situations that seem hopeless. One of the best ways of realizing this is to create a game of ‘What if I’d rather be dead?’ and ‘What if I could still be a person, but I wouldn’t have to be a party-loving, party-going, party-throwing idiot?’ and see how we both end up having a lot of fun.
When I see a game that has a couple of good, good characters, I make a decision about what to do and what not to do, and what to do not. If I have a good character and one bad character in my own game, I can see that I have a better character and a better character that I don’t.
I think this is true, and we’re a little bit spoiled for choice by the big, bad, evil characters that have become such a part of the gaming landscape. They’ve gotten a bad rap, but it’s not quite fair to single them out as the bad guys. I think that they’re actually the better villains, but there’s not much they can do about it.
Compensating balance is one of the more interesting ideas in game design. When you have a game with both good and bad characters, I can imagine a wide range of balance points between the two. Theyre each in a number of different kinds of games, and can often be very well balanced. For example, a game that has a good character (the hero) and a bad character (the villain), can have a very good balance between the two.
