This is a perfect example of why working on self-awareness is so important for anyone with a job. I know that when I went to school I had some of this self-awareness, but I also had a lot of other self-awareness. For example, when I first got my first real job as a student I was very aware of how I was perceived by people. I knew that I had to work hard to get a job, so I had to be very aware of how I behaved in the workplace.
This is a good point. I am sure that many of us have some self-awareness, but we’ve probably forgotten about some of it. As students, we often have no idea what our teachers are thinking about us, and by the time we graduate, we’re so used to being treated like any other employee that we tend to forget how we’re being treated by our company.
In many companies, management and employees are very good at ignoring each other. This is especially true where there is a lot of power and influence in the organization. But I am not sure that this is the case everywhere. In the mid 1980s, I worked for a large, well-known tech company. I remember one of my co-workers, a young guy named Chris, telling me that he wanted to be a manager.
At that point in my career, my co-worker Chris was still in his mid-teens, and was the youngest of many co-workers. So I wasn’t exactly sure if I should have taken him up on it. However, I had always had a very strong belief in my own ability to be a manager and I knew that I could do it. If I gave it my best shot, I knew I could do it.
Chris was right. I never even got close to being a manager. I was a lowly programmer in an office that wasnt even very big, but I couldnt help but be a little jealous that a young guy like Chris wanted to be a manager so much. Unfortunately, the job didnt come with all the perks and status that I had hoped for. I was in a completely different job, but not by much.
