We want to do everything right, but too often we fail. The difference between success and failure is in the outcome. A poor performance can ruin a business, an underperformed work can ruin your personal finances, and a failure can kill your relationships.
A bad performance can be easily fixed, but a poor performance can be difficult to overcome. And a failure that kills your relationships or destroys your business is not likely to ever be fixed. One of the best ways to deal with failure or underperformance is to ask ourselves what we want to do and work towards it.
We want to avoid a failure, at the same time as we want to avoid a failure.
The word “failure” can refer to a negative outcome or a negative outcome that is not what you wish it to be. It is likely that you will either overachieve or underachieve in your career. But the point is that both outcomes are not likely to be fixed. We want to avoid both outcomes. Overachiever or underachiever is good. But a failure that destroys your business or your relationships is a bad outcome.
When we are not getting the results that we want, our first reaction is to over-achieve. We believe we can do better, something that we imagine will make us feel better about ourselves. We then feel better, thinking that we’ve done something to improve. But the problem is that our overachievement is an illusion. When over-achievement is a false positive, it makes it much harder to see the failure that lies just under the surface.
The idea of underperform is not a bad thing. What a bad thing is, is the belief that a person is not achieving their goals and doesn’t deserve to be happy. A person who feels this way is in denial. They are a victim of their own success, and they believe that their own achievements are the true measure of their worth.
As a writer, I’ve seen this myself. I have seen the underperformals come about in the writing of others. I’ve seen people who have set their sights on a particular goal and have set themselves on a path that is going to lead them to that goal. I’ve seen a lot of people who are really talented and have nothing to prove, and are just going to keep going.
A lot of us have set our sights on “something that I think will make me rich or famous”. While this can have its good sides, it can also have its bad sides too. We set our sights on things we are sure will make us famous or rich. We set our sights on what we think can give us the most enjoyment or satisfaction.
I believe the key is to set your sights on the things you don’t believe are right about the world. For instance, the word _man_ would be better used when you think about the way we think of the world. You can’t really think what’s right or wrong about _every_ thing. It can take a lot of arguments to get you to believe it’s right.
And the key is to have a good reason and set your sights on the things that you can achieve. This includes everything from trying to be the first person to use the word _mammal_ in a newspaper headline, to getting the word _man_ in a headline about the way we use language.
