What is the journal of agriculture you ask? Well, it’s a journal that documents the development of food systems to enhance food security in the developing world. The journal is unique in that it provides a snapshot of the state of food systems in the developing world and it is based on the experiences of experts in the field.
With farming in the news more than we’d like, we wanted to create something that focuses on the good things that are to come with food production. It will allow us to look at how food comes to our table in a way that is not only empowering but also uplifting. Our food system is not just about the physical, but also about the ways we work together as a community to bring the food to the table.
Food security is a global problem. Food security concerns one’s ability to access sufficient, affordable, nutritious food in a timely fashion. World hunger has grown at a rate of 20 million people every year for the past 45 years, and is predicted to reach 1.3 billion people by the year 2050. The world’s population is projected to increase from about 7.6 billion today to 9.1 billion by 2050.
The food and agriculture industry, the food and agriculture sector employs more than half of all direct and indirect employment around the world. On average, this industry employed nearly a million people in 2018, with some estimates putting the figure at half a million. The industry has many stakeholders, including the government, companies, farmers, and consumers. For these organizations to work together, this industry has to think strategically. A business plan that is developed from a food and agriculture perspective will be more effective and more successful.
Agriculture is a large and complex field and the journal of agriculture food systems and community development is the perfect place to explore some of the more common and complex issues we need to keep an eye on today.
The most important thing to consider when it comes to food systems is that they need to be sustainable. That means they need to be part of a sustainable food production system that ensures the communities that are consuming them are not starving. And that all of the stakeholders in a food system should be working together to make sure that that sustainable system is run by a system that is accountable to the community (and ultimately to the community itself).
Let’s face it, when you talk about agriculture, you’re probably talking about the crops we grow. The food that we eat could be described as the foundation of our economic prosperity.
