this was one of the first questions I asked over lunch at a new home builder. I was trying to figure out how to calculate the margin of safety in a new home. I wasn’t really sure, but I had a few ideas. I decided to take a “what if” approach and make a table of the minimum and maximum margin of safety. I’ll show you the result below.
I’m sure you have your own ideas on this. There are a couple of concepts I’ve encountered that I’d like to discuss, but they’re more of a curiosity than anything else. I’ll share them with you because as long as you’re asking questions, it helps us make progress.
So for example, what if we’re building a new home and we need to add on a room but have no other ideas on how this is to be done? So we have to estimate the size of the room we need and we also need to determine the number of bedrooms and bathrooms that we need to include in the space. Now there are two ways to do this.
The first way is to take a piece of paper and draw a rectangle on the wall and then figure out how much of that rectangle there needs to be. When you draw the rectangle, what you dont know is the width and height of the wall and how big the room is. So youll have to extrapolate from the size of the rectangle that is on the floor and in the room on the wall to figure out the width and height of the room.
The second way is to take the rectangle and make a little grid. In the first case, you’ll have to figure out how much of it the rectangle needs to be. The way to do this is to draw a square and then figure out how much of the square the rectangle needs to be.
The more you draw the better you can figure out the width of the wall. If you’re going to draw a square from the floor, you’ll also have to figure out how much of the square your rectangle needs to be. In general, I’ll take the rectangle and draw it into the right shape.
What we’re doing in this exercise is drawing the rectangle and then figuring out how much of the rectangle the wall needs to be. In this case the rectangle is the wall and the wall needs to be about half the height.
Since the wall is only half the height, the whole idea here is to figure out how much of the wall to draw the rectangle into. If you draw it into the right shape, you get a rectangle the same width as the wall. If you draw it into the wrong shape, you get a rectangle the same width as half the height. This calculation is important because if the rectangle is the same width as the wall, then there is no need to calculate the height.
The margin of safety is a mathematical method to calculate the minimum amount of space a user should be allowed to move.
