Foundational research in food and agriculture was carried out at the University of Leicester, UK, with the help of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). NERC is a part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and is responsible for the long-term research on food and agriculture.
