We tend to think that our income is a fixed, one-time revenue source. What we forget is that our income is dynamic. We can work towards creating a certain amount of income, or we can work towards earning more.

For the most part our income is a fixed number. In the long-term this can be a good thing because it means we’re investing in the long-term growth of our business. As much as it can be frustrating at the beginning, the truth is that we can earn more money. This is because our income tends to be more stable, and it’s only because of our focus on the long-term.
In the short-term though, it can be a bad thing if our income isn’t consistent (because we’re spending money that wasn’t budgeted). The truth is that there is no way to know exactly how much we should be spending and how much we’re making now. Our focus is on building a sustainable business, and once we get that working, we can focus on building the revenue that will keep our growing business running.
A small business like ours needs to be able to maintain a consistent level of income. Our business depends on it. If we have a couple of months with our income being down slightly, that will likely be because we are not spending the budgeted money on the right things. If our income drops to half the amount that we were making before, that is because we are not spending the budgeted money on the right things.
The good news is that we don’t have to depend on the revenue that we get from the sales of our first-to-market games. We don’t need any income from the first-to-market games and our first-to-market games are not our revenue.
