What are Cannabis medical treatments?
Cannabis based medicines are used quite commonly to treat patients medical issues. The cannabis plant holds cannabinoids such as delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol also known as THC and cannabidiol also commonly known as CBD. THC is a stronger form of cannabis causing extreme intoxication and creating what is known to be a ‘high’ for the patient whereas CBD I much less intoxicating and therefore has less dangerous side effects than THC.
Why do we use Cannabis based medicines?
Recently, studies have shown that cannabis based medicines have only proved to be effective at treating certain medical issues. One of the most common times cannabis based medicines are given is to treat nausea caused by chemotherapy. The cannabis based medicine Nabilone is man made and given to patients whilst going through chemotherapy to relieve their nauseous symptoms. However, it is stated that patients are only given cannabis based medicines when other treatment has failed to be effective. Another type of cannabis based medicine is Nabiximols which is taken orally and used to treat patients with muscle issues due to sclerosis. However, Epidoylex is a different type of cannabis based medicine which does not get you high as it does not contain tetrahydrocannabinol unlike other cannabis based medicines. This type of cannabis based medicine is used as a treatment for patients with extreme diagnosis of epilepsy.
Do cannabis based medicines have side effects?
Each type of cannabis based product has different side effects for each person, those products which only contain CBD are less risky to take but products that contain a large amount of THC are likely to cause more side effects. One of the main and most dangerous side effects of THC cannabis products is the development of schizophrenia, as the cannabis creates paranoia for the patient and causes them to hallucinate. Another major side effect of THC cannabis products is that they can become addictive if the patient’s cannabis consumption is not controlled by doctors and can lead to an over reliance on this treatment. CBD cannabis products are less risky but do still have some side effects such as hallucinations, drastic mood swings which lead to suicidal thoughts and sickness and dizziness feelings. However, purchasing cannabis off the streets illegally is the most dangerous way to use cannabis as it is not checked by a doctor and can involve other unknown ingredients that may cause more of a reaction. It is ultimately safe to take cannabis for medical issues as long as it is checked over by a doctor.
