A label is a piece of paper or a piece of computer generated code that is placed on a food and tells consumers how food contains certain amounts of certain things. They can also include the percent of organic ingredients, such as fruits and vegetables, as well as the percentages of nutrients in food. A label will tell you how much of certain ingredients are in a product, whether a product is pasteurized, whether it contains genetically modified ingredients, and whether it contains pesticides.
Some products are not labeled with the word “organic” on them. Organic food products are typically those with a 100% certified non-GMO label. If an organic food product does not have that label, it must then be labeled as “non-organic.” The most common way to prove that a food is organic is by checking to make sure that all of its ingredients are organic.
Organic ingredients is the new “go-to” term for food. However, it’s not the only way to label a food. Organic food has been labeled as “natural” with the added qualifier of “organic.” This is because organic food is based on the idea that the foods you eat are derived from plants grown in a natural environment. This is important because it ensures that the foods you eat are not contaminated by chemicals or pesticides.
Since organic is a fancy term for nature, it’s easy to forget that this is actually quite a technical term. That’s why I am here to share the simple math behind it. The amount of ingredients in a food that are organic actually depend on, what you would consider, “natural” ingredients. Organic farming methods, farming practices, and the way the crops are grown all contribute to how many ingredients, and in what percentage, a food might come from.
If you’ve ever been given a jar of organic produce, you know that the food may come from organic farms, but the packaging may still be made out of non-organic materials. There are a few people out there who don’t like the label on the jar being “organic.” That’s because they believe the ingredients in the jar aren’t organic. I say no to them. There are some things around the food industry that are simply unacceptable.
Organic is a term for what’s in your food that does not contain artificial ingredients, such as hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, or GMOs. If you are shopping for groceries, organic may be a key factor to consider. Because it is so crucial to the health of the body, it’s important to find a food that has natural ingredients in it which can avoid any type of chemical toxins.
All you know about the organic label is that it’s pretty much just a label that means that a product has to be grown and produced with organically grown (or “Organic”) ingredients. Unfortunately, there are a lot of misleading terms and terms applied to the real label. For instance, a product could be labeled “Organic Coffee” because it would probably have some fruit from an organic supplier, which would certainly be labeled by the USDA as “organic”.
