The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car.
The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us.
The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when were not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us.
There is a very simple reason why we have to start the day off on autopilot: We’re not asleep. We are in the middle of a sleep schedule. If we’re not asleep, we can’t control our habits and routines. It’s like trying to control a bad mood.
If you’re not on autopilot, you aren’t on the actual night shift. Because you are in the middle of a sleep schedule. You don’t need to be on autopilot when you are asleep. In fact, when you are on autopilot for so long, you forget your habits and routines. You don’t need to go to sleep in your chair. It’s the same with the video game.
But just like in the movie, our habits and routines can be very detrimental to our health. Research shows that the average person who is on autopilot for more than 20 hours a day is 60 percent more likely to suffer from depression and that they also have far more alcohol and drug use.
It’s possible we all have autopilot habits. In my case, I do not. I’m really good at remembering my routines, and I’m usually not that far from home. I can usually get an hour or two of sleep in on a Sunday night without snacking or drinking. I’m not even sure if my girlfriend knows that I’m usually not home when she comes home from work until well after midnight.
Although it’s a little weird to call our autopilot habits, it’s true that we don’t actually have to be aware of our habits. We can simply be the people who’s lives depend on the fact that the autopilot is operating, and we’re just sitting in front of the television with our iPhones.
I know I’m not the only one who’s guilty of this, but I think it’s important to distinguish between the things that we actually do consciously and those that are simply autopilot processes. For example, I know my girlfriend has a habit where she will wake up in the morning and tell me she’s going to take a shower. I know she’s doing it because she’s getting up and going to her desk.
This is a simple example of a habit that doesn’t involve any conscious decision to act. But it’s important to note that we are just sitting there in front of the television so we can watch a show that requires a certain amount of attention. We are not actually thinking about anything at all, because that requires thought, and we don’t have any.
